Using a Basic Suite applications like GoogleDrive is very useful in education. We now live in a digital world where the majority of communication happens through some digital medium such as: social media, video, graphics, and more. It is crucial that teachers take advantage of the communication advantages of technology to collaborate with fellow educators as well as students. Students will join the work force in some way and need to be prepared to communicate and share their ideas through a digital medium as well.
Word processing applications give teachers and students the ability to construct documents using words and images in a layout that best communicates their thoughts. The primary function on a word processor is to organize and display words for the readers (Robyler, 2016, p.112). Through GoogleDocs students and teachers have the ability to work together on the same document at the same time. Group members can compose different parts of the same document at the same time. This allows to students to connect outside the classroom as well as globally. Another advantage of GoogleDocs is that is give students and teachers the ability to share their final work through a link that is viewable online through sharing a link.
Spreadsheet applications give teachers and student the ability to organize and analyze data sets and numbers. Spreadsheets have many applicable functions in finance, math, and science (Roblyer, 2016, p.120). Through the function commands in spreadsheets you have the ability to have the spreadsheet calculate information for you as you work in the spreadsheet. You also have the ability to create charts that work in response with the data you input. In the math classroom students have the ability to organize large data sets that they obtain through experiments and can use GoogleSheets to store and analyze their findings. As a teacher I utilize Excel to create chart to show student growth and progress from the data I have in Canvas Mastery Gradebook.
Presentation applications such as PowerPoint and GoogleSlides allow teachers and students to present information. Many companies and business use this type of software to help explain information to a larger group (Roblyer, 2016, p.125). It is crucial that teachers and students take advantage of this software. The relative advantage is to provide supplementary materials to a speech or presentation. As a teacher presentation software helps teacher to create engaging lesson plans that help to hold the students attention. By embedding material and creating links to material teachers can have one cohesive presentation that comes from one source. Students also have the opportunity to use presentation software in their own presentations in school.
